health - vitality - calmness
Recharge your body’s batteries with a restorative shiatsu treatment.
Your nervous system can experience relaxation.
You can give yourself permission for deep rest.
Shiatsu touch, in its stillness, depth and gentle compassion, is able to support the whole person.
Shiatsu is a Japanese term and means 'finger pressure'.

Every body and everyone can benefit from shiatsu.
Adults, teens, children, the elderly, pregnant women, athletes and people with special needs
Shiatsu originates from Japan and is rooted in traditional oriental medicine.
It is a preventive health measure, meaning the emphasis is on promoting health and nourishing the vital energies tied to good health. Yes, it is absolutely legitimate to come for shiatsu sessions if you feel fine! In our western culture it is often the other way around; we seek help and support only when we already notice a physical complaint.
Shiatsu stimulates the body's self-healing capacities. Shiatsu is a powerful tool that can address the many layers and subtleties of our bodies and minds. Shiatsu creates space for healing in all the bodily systems.
Traditionally, Shiatsu is given on a futon on the floor, but it can easily be adapted for treatments on a table or while sitting on a chair or wheelchair.

Shiatsu helps if you...
feel fatigue, lack of energy, stress, anxiety
feel pain of any sort (back pain, menstrual pains, growing pains..)
experience difficult emotional states
have difficulties sleeping
have motor problems (knees, hips...)
feel fine and just want to relax

Lisa Kollwelter
Physiotherapist and shiatsu practitioner
I am trained as a physiotherapist and am specialized in pediatric neurology. I am also trained in Shiatsu and love its language of ‘listening’ to the body and being fully present with the receiver.
Both physical therapy and Shiatsu combine well together, and allow my practice as a therapist to be more complete and holistic.
I work with children, teens, adults and the elderly.
I work with women before, during and after pregnancy.
I do home visits for people with special needs and for people with reduced mobility.

Who benefits from Shiatsu?
Children and Teens
Shiatsu has a soothing effect on the nervous system and can thus support the young adult who goes through many changes. Restlessness, nervousness, hyperactivity, social anxieties, shyness as well as sleep problems can all find relief with shiatsu as it increases their awareness in their bodies.
It also helps with preparing for stressful exam periods. In our culture nowadays, we can be very head-centered (screen-centered) and shiatsu can help settle the energies lower in our bodies, thus creating more balance in our nervous systems.
Adults
Adults also go through changes…
Oftentimes, shiatsu allows people to tap into their bodies and allow them to feel their bodies better. The effect is often restorative as well as relaxing.
Shiatsu supports hormonal seasons (menopause, pregnancy, menstrual cycles), re-balances gently the big effects hormones can have on us.
People with special needs
I work with children with diff-abilities. You read that right, not dis-abilities, but diff-abilities. Oftentimes, people that are bound to wheelchairs lack quality touch, as they are ‘handled’ in and out of beds, wheelchairs, toilets, etc. Shiatsu is highly effective and appreciated by people who are challenged to move by themselves, and their nervous systems are often hungry for a touch-conscious treatment.
Pregnant women
The many changes pregnant women go through (back pain, heavy legs, pelvic floor changes, headaches, stress) can be alleviated and eased with regular shiatsu sessions. Shiatsu helps the woman prepare for childbirth as it works on opening the pelvis, softening and keeping mobility, which favours childbirth.
Pelvic floor work before and after birth are of special importance, and the physical therapist in me will focus, guide and work on the group of muscles which are loaded throughout the pregnancy and which need attention, in order to prevent a wide range of discomforts and problems (urine leaks, incontinences, pelvic pains, diastasis recti, prolapses, etc.)
Elderly
Touch is essential and yet the elderly can often be deficient of touch. The touch of shiatsu has a reviving quality and through its presence offers care and support in itself.
Pains can be relieved and breathing patterns and posture improved. Shiatsu can be given while seated or in half-lying position as well as in a wheelchair.
Athletes
Joint flexibility is enhanced through stretches and passive mobilisations and the psychological effects of sports (competition, performance) can be integrated through shiatsu. The mental aspects of high performance sports are recognised and will allow the athlete better rest, and therefore better activity and performance.
